Creating online yoga offerings as a yoga teacher is no walk in the park, despite what social media success stories may portray. The story of achieving business growth with just a few simple steps can be misleading and diminish the real challenges faced by teachers starting their online ventures.
Transitioning fully or partially online is not a complicated process, but let’s be clear—it’s not easy. The steps themselves may be simple, but numerous obstacles can slow your progress. Many yoga teachers grapple with technological challenges, camera shyness, and the dilemma of choosing what to offer in the vast online space.
I haven’t met many yoga teachers who enjoy the tasks of social media management, website building, or video recording. Perhaps, it’s just the circle I find myself in; after all, they say we attract our tribe…
For me, the decision to transition online wasn’t a choice but a financial necessity. Faced with bills to pay, a husband who lost his job, and a little one not even a year old, I needed to make it work—and quickly.
I’m not suggesting you wait until you hit rock bottom to make the leap, but I do want to emphasize that you don’t need a website, Instagram followers, or advanced video editing skills to embark on this journey. Most yoga teachers, including myself, started with none of these.
What’s NOT essential to get started
Let’s debunk some common myths about what yoga teachers might think they need to start offering something online. Fancy, expensive equipment is often considered a prerequisite, but do you really need a high-end camera, microphone, or computer to record your first course? Not at all.
In addition, the belief that one must be a tech expert is dispelled. I’ll let you in on a secret—I don’t edit any of my videos. If I make a mistake, I address it just as I would in real life—apologize and move forward.
There’s also the notion that a yoga teacher must invest in a pricey website, potentially paying someone $3000 for it. This, too, is a misconception, especially if you haven’t solidified your offerings, personal branding, or messaging. When I transitioned online, I didn’t have a website, Instagram followers beyond friends and family, and absolutely no idea how to record a course.
Website building doesn’t have to break the bank. Yoga teachers can create a one-page website for just $18 a year, adding pages as needed. Alternatively, platforms like Canva offer free options for creating website pages. The days of needing a $3000 website to begin your online journey are long gone.
I’ve personally never shelled out $3000 for a website. In fact, I crafted both my websites for online offerings and business coaching by myself. Check out yogablisslembongan.com for my in-person and online yoga programs and yogacareerwithgwen.com for my coaching business for yoga teachers.
While social media is a fantastic tool for building a community and marketing yoga offerings, diving in without a foundation can be counterproductive. Before mastering the art of social media, yoga teachers need business foundations, clarity on their target audience, and a defined mission and vision.
Actions that will make a difference
Community Engagement: Rather than focusing on gaining followers, build a genuine community.
Providing Valuable Content: Prioritize delivering value in every piece of content you share.
Leveraging Existing Networks: Communicate offerings to past in-person students and collaborate with fellow yoga teachers to spread the word.
Feedback and Adaptation: Be open to receiving feedback and adapt your offerings based on real student input.
The most profound lesson in my journey was understanding that perfection is not the goal; connection is. Students seek authenticity and relatability, not polished, unattainable perfection. Focusing on what truly matters—sharing my knowledge and passion for yoga authentically—made all the difference.
Transitioning to teaching yoga online doesn’t have to be overwhelming or require a hefty upfront investment. With the right mindset, strategic actions, and a focus on connection over perfection, you can embark on this journey successfully.
